Introduction
What are chakras
Chakras are energy centers in the subtle (non-physical) body. The word “chakra” comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” or “disk” — referring to spinning vortices of energy (prana or life force) that regulate physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Core Concept
In traditional systems, chakras are points where energy channels (nadis) intersect. When balanced and flowing freely, they support health and harmony. When blocked, overactive, or underactive, they are believed to contribute to physical ailments, emotional imbalances, or spiritual disconnection.
The most widely referenced system describes seven major chakras aligned along the spine, from the base to the crown of the head. Each is associated with a specific color, element, sound (mantra), crystal, and aspects of life.
Seven Main Chakras
Root Chakra- Muladhara
Location: Base of the spine / pelvic floor
Color: Red
Element: Earth
Key Associations: Survival, security, grounding, stability, physical body & basic needs
Common Signs of Imbalance: Fear, anxiety, financial insecurity, fatigue, lower back/leg pain, feeling ungrounded
Sacral Chakra- Svadhisthana
Location: Lower abdomen (below navel)
Color: Orange
Element: Water
Key Associations: Creativity, sexuality, emotions, pleasure, relationships
Common Signs of Imbalance: Emotional instability, creative blocks, intimacy issues, low libido, guilt, reproductive/hip problems

Common Signs of Imbalance: Grief, jealousy, resentment, heart/lung issues, difficulty giving/receiving love
Throat Chakra- Vishuddha
Location: Throat / neck
Color: Blue
Element: Ether / Sound
Key Associations: Communication, truth, self-expression, listening
Common Signs of Imbalance: Difficulty speaking up, sore throat, thyroid issues, fear of judgment, dishonesty
Third Eye Chakra- Ajna
Location: Forehead, between the eyebrows
Color: Indigo
Element: Light
Key Associations: Intuition, insight, wisdom, imagination, clarity
Common Signs of Imbalance: Lack of focus, headaches/migraines, poor intuition, confusion, nightmares
Crown Chakra- Sahasrara
Location: Top (crown) of the head
Color: Violet or White
Element: Thought / Divine Consciousness
Key Associations: Spiritual connection, enlightenment, unity, higher purpose
Common Signs of Imbalance: Feeling disconnected from life, cynicism, spiritual disconnection, depression, neurological issues
• Balanced chakras are believed to support overall harmony and vitality.
• Imbalances can be underactive (blocked) or overactive, and they often influence each other.
• Practices like meditation, yoga, breathwork, sound healing, working with colors/crystals, etc are commonly used to help restore balance.
Beyond the Seven Main Chakras
Beyond the seven main chakras, many spiritual and yogic traditions recognize additional energy centers. While the 7-chakra system is the most popular in the West, classical texts (such as the Vedas and Tantras) describe hundreds of chakras throughout the body. Modern practitioners often work with expanded systems (e.g., 12, 13, or more chakras)
Here are some of the additional chakras:
Earth & Lower Chakras (Below the Root)
• Earth Star Chakra (also called Subpersonal or Gaia Gateway)
Location: About 6–12 inches below the feet, connecting to the Earth.
Color: Deep brown, black, or reddish-brown.
Function: Deep grounding, connection to the planet, ancestral healing, and environmental awareness.
Imbalance signs: Feeling ungrounded, disconnection from nature/body, chronic fatigue.
Higher/Transpersonal Chakras (Above the Crown)
• Soul Star Chakra (8th Chakra)
Location: About 6–12 inches above the crown of the head.
Color: White, gold, or bright magenta.
Function: Soul purpose, past lives, higher spiritual contracts, and karmic patterns.
Imbalance signs: Lack of direction, spiritual disconnection, repeating life patterns.
• Stellar Gateway Chakra (often considered the 9th or higher)
Location: Further above the Soul Star (12–18+ inches).
Color: White, gold, or shimmering light.
Function: Connection to the universe, divine wisdom, higher dimensions, and cosmic energy.
Imbalance signs: Overwhelm from spiritual experiences, feeling lost in the “big picture.”
• Causal Chakra (sometimes between Soul Star and Crown)
Location: Back of the head, near the base of the skull.
Color: White or gold.
Function: Access to the Akashic records, higher knowledge, and karmic memory.
Other Notable Chakras
• Higher Heart Chakra (Thymus or “Seat of the Soul”)
Location: Between the Heart and Throat chakras (thymus gland area).
Color: Pink, turquoise, or teal.
Function: Unconditional love, compassion at a higher level, immune system link, and self-love.
Imbalance signs: Difficulty forgiving, immune issues, emotional guardedness.
• Zeal Chakra (also called Mouth of God or Alta Major)
Location: Back of the neck / base of the skull.
Color: Magenta or deep purple.
Function: Spiritual awakening, intuition, and channeling higher guidance.
• Lunar & Solar Chakras (sometimes included in 12-chakra systems)
• Lunar: Left side of the body, feminine/receptive energy.
• Solar: Right side, masculine/active energy.
114 Chakras
The 114 Chakras refer to a more comprehensive energy system described in certain yogic and Tantric traditions. While the 7 main chakras are the most well-known, ancient texts and modern teachers (notably Sri Amit Ray and insights from Sadhguru) describe a total of 114 chakras in the human system.
Overview of the 114 Chakra System
• Total: 114 chakras.
• Breakdown (according to Sri Amit Ray’s widely referenced model):
• 7 Major Chakras — The primary ones along the spine (Root through Crown).
• 21 Minor / Power Chakras — Secondary centers often linked to organs, glands, or key energy hubs.
• 86 Micro Chakras — Smaller, more subtle points distributed throughout the body (e.g., in the hands, feet, joints, tongue, etc.).
• Distribution: 108 chakras are considered workable within or closely associated with the body; the remaining few extend into the auric field or higher consciousness.
• Connection to Nadis: These 114 chakras are major junction points where the 72,000 nadis (subtle energy channels) intersect, similar to how highways meet at major interchanges.
This system views chakras not just as simple “wheels” but as intelligent, self-organizing centers that regulate energy, cognition, emotions, immunity, and consciousness.
