Details:
The term ‘wrought’ is a more primordial participle of ‘work’. ‘Wrought iron’ literally means ‘worked iron.’ Historically, the phrase referred both to the general class of refined iron and, more specifically, to finished iron goods shaped by a blacksmith. This narrower definition distinguished blacksmith-forged products, from ‘unwrought’ (semi-finished) iron such as cast iron, which is brittle and cannot be forged either hot or cold.
Wrought iron, commonly called ‘pure iron’ in more traditional terminology, is a highly ductile iron alloy with an extremely low carbon content (< 0.05%), far lower than cast iron (2.1–4.5%) or modern mild steel (≈0.25%). Wrought iron is manufactured by heating and melting high carbon cast iron in an open charcoal, coke hearth, or furnace. The high temperatures cause the excess carbon to oxidize, resulting in the characteristic fibrous, corrosion-resistant material prized by blacksmiths and conservators.
